We Need your help Have you had a deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in the legs) or a pulmonary embolism (blood clot on the lungs) either while you were in hospital or shortly after being discharged? Or has this happened to a relative of yours? Over 25,000 people die every year following a DVT or PE after a stay in hospital. AntiCoagulation Europe is producing an educational programme to highlight the risks of DVT and PE and needs to talk to people who have had this experience, or to relatives of those who have died. · A daily pill that could help prevent deaths from blood clots following elective hip and knee replacement surgery has received its license · Bloods clots or venous thrombo-embolism (VTE), cause 1 in 10 fatalities in hospital and kill at least 25,000 people in the England every year - more than 20 times the number of deaths attributed to the superbug MRSA · The pill, called Pradaxa® (dabigatran etexilate), is the first new blood-thinning treatment to be made available as a tablet in over half a century · Currently, many patients undergoing hip and knee replacement surgery who should receive medicines to prevent blood clots are not doing so Many of the 130,000 UK patients who every year undergo total hip or total knee replacement are at high risk of developing a venous thrombo-embolism or VTE. VTE may occur inside a deep vein, partially or totally blocking the flow of blood - this is called a deep vein thrombosis or DVT. Without treatment to prevent VTE as many as 60 per cent of patients will develop a DVT, while up to 1 in 10 patients will develop a potentially fatal pulmonary embolism (PE), where the clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs. | Want to self test?
